8. Do submit your site to directories like Yahoo! and Open Directory as well as search engines.
Open Directory is a human-edited directory that provides results to Altavista, AOL, Google, Hotbot, IWon, Lycos, Netscape, Teoma and many others, so it’s important to request a listing in this directory. Submission is free, and your site will be reviewed by an actual person; it can take two weeks or more to be reviewed, and if your site is included, it can take two weeks or more for the other engines to update with your new listing. Not all sites are accepted by Open Directory, so follow the submission instructions carefully. It can also be very difficult to make changes to a directory listing once it’s been added, so it’s important to make sure you do it properly the first time.
Yahoo! has recently restored their free submission option, so spend some time submitting your URL at Yahoo!, too. Rumor has it that ranking well in Yahoo! is difficult without also paying for their SiteMatch (Overture) service, but having a link from Yahoo! (as well as Open Directory, Jayde, and other directories) will probably increase your Page Rank, as well, which is important to Google.
