Previous Page: 8. Don’t design your entire site with Flash.

9. Don’t use bulk submissions, free for alls or link farms.

Many experts now suggest that submitting your site to search engines shouldn’t be necessary at all. As long as your site has links to it from other sites, it will be found by the search engines, and there is some indication that allowing the engines to find your site on their own through these links may result in higher ranking.

Whether you build your links and then wait for this to happen or you decide to submit via the search engines’ “add a site” pages, do not bother with bulk submissions. Submitting to long lists of search engines or directories is not necessary; there are about a dozen search engines and directories which are used by the vast majority of people. Having a high ranking in the search engines which people use is more important than being listed in hundreds or thousands of engines and directories that no one has ever heard of. It is important to have links to your site, but links from link farms or free for alls can actually hurt your ranking. Requesting links to your site from legitimate sites with related content may take longer, but will be more helpful in the long run.
