Previous Page: 3. Don’t share IP addresses with other sites.

4. Don’t use free hosting.

There are lots of hosts that provide free space; while that may sound like a great deal, make sure you know what will be involved. Many of these hosts will display your pages within the frames of their own site, with advertising all around your pages. Free web space will also limit what you can use for a domain name; www.freewebspace.com/yoursite is not as professional as www.yoursite.com, and search engines may not index sites with these names as readily or place them as high in their ranking as those with their own address. Sharing web space with lots of other sites may also mean more down time or slower load times; if your site is not available for search engine spiders, you won’t get indexed, and if your site loads slowly, your potential customers may not wait. Sharing free web space with other sites will also mean sharing IP addresses, which can get your site banned.

The solution: spring for a hosting package that will allow you to have your own IP address and your own domain name. There are lots of hosts with reasonable pricing, and while it costs more than the free options, your site’s ranking will benefit.
