Previous Page: 9. Don’t use bulk submissions, free for alls or link farms.

10. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket (one page, one keyword, one search engine)

Anyone who has ever had a top 10 ranking for a great keyword one month—and then lost that ranking the next—knows how erratic the search engines can seem. Search engines rank web pages based on algorithms which they change routinely. If you optimize only one of your pages for one keyword or one search engine, the inevitable change of the rankings will seem devastating.

Try to optimize each of your site’s pages for two or three terms, and try to add new pages routinely. More pages mean more words and more opportunities to be found by the search engines. Even if you lose your ranking on one term for one page, you’ll still have many other terms that people can use to find your site.
