7. Do build links to your site to increase your site’s “popularity.” As soon as your site is complete, it’s tempting to start submitting it to the search engines right away. But many search engines, including Google, place popular sites higher in search results. The best way to increase your site’s perceived popularity is by having lots of good, quality links to you. Take a look at how Google defines and uses "Page Rank" to provide its highly relevant search results and you'll see how important this really is. Before you spend time submitting your site, you should start building your site’s popularity by increasing the number of backlinks or links to your site from other sites. To find out how many pages have already linked to you, you can use the LinksToYou Counter at http://linkstoyou.com/CheckLinks.htm.
Think of professional organizations, chambers of commerce, or other business directories in your area that might provide links to your new site and e-mail their webmaster (or follow their “add a URL” instructions). Consider creating a Links page at your site to provide reciprocal links to other sites. Another part of these links that will raise your ranking even higher is if the backlinks contain the keywords relevant to the linked page. If you can find a way to incorporate your keywords in these links--by providing the link text when you exchange links with other businesses, for example--it is in your best interest to do so.
