3. Do remember that Content is King: include substantial content at your site. Content is King. You hear this all the time in relation to web sites and search engines because...well, it's true. Writing copy for your web site is not as easy as duplicating your print materials online; you do need to focus for an audience who can click away in mere seconds. But some web owners take this to mean that their pages should be extra short and sweet. Remember that search engines, too, are looking for relevance! They are not as likely to find it in pages that are TOO short or concise. Give them some substancearound 200 to 300 words worth, at least. Organize your text in bullets, short paragraphs, or columns if you’re worried that it looks too “wordy.” Some web site owners also create the smallest possible site and then wonder why it doesn't appear in search engines. While some may argue that it is possible to optimize web sites that are only a page or two in size, there is some evidence that Google doesn’t think small sites provide significant enough content to add to their index. Google also doesn’t recommend the use of “doorway” pagesweb pages that exist only for the purpose of leading search engines directly to another pageand single page websites may look like doorway pages to Googlebot. Yahoo also seems to penalize sites which are smaller than three pages in size, so in general you stand a better chance of being indexed if your site has at least a handful of pages. Having trouble coming up with enough content? Try pulling your contact information into another page, or adding a FAQ page or About Us page, if you don’t already have them. These pages are relatively easy to generate and provide many more opportunities to add in your keywords, which is the real benefit of having many pages: you’re providing more content for search engines to index. Ideally you would add a page to your site for every product or service you offer, with each of these pages optimized for its own keywords. The more pages and keywords you can optimize for, the more traffic you will attract to your website. Home | Register | Host | Design | Upload | Promote © 2001-2004 MidcoastBusiness.com.
