After a long absence, we're back with some great new information that we'll be sharing through the summer months: our follow-up article about how to improve search engine rankings, some tips on how to save money when working with a web or print designer, and more!

We've received a number of e-mails recently from friends and clients asking us to check and see if their e-mail attachments contain viruses. While our computers are protected by antivirus software that recognizes viruses and quarantines them, these messages suggest that there are some folks out there who may not be adequately protected.

Many Internet Service Providers now offer SPAM blocking which filters out a lot of viruses. However, this filtering is not enough to completely protect your computer from viruses. Even if you have filters checking your e-mail, you should still have antivirus software installed on your computer and updated regularly. Microsoft has a series of articles about computer viruses which describes what computer viruses are, how to tell if you're infected, how to remove viruses, and how to protect your system from viruses. You can read these articles online here:

If you suspect that an e-mail attachment contains a virus, it probably does. Delete it immediately—and don't send it to anyone else.

We used to provide information about the latest virus threats via this newsletter, but new viruses are discovered daily and it was getting difficult for us to keep up! We've added a link to Symantec's Security Response page from the home page at MidcoastBusiness.com. Symantec has a listing of the latest threats, discovery and protection dates, and additional information about new viruses. You can view that listing at any time by visiting Symantec's site here:

Or visit our home page and click the Latest Virus Threats link at the bottom of the home page.

Anyone thinking about Christmas in July?! Research last year showed that online shoppers began their holiday shopping in October, not in November, while the majority of online merchants did not prepare their holiday specials until after Halloween. If this Christmas shopping season is the same, the early bird will get the worm, so read more about this here:
