Top Ten Dos (and Don'ts) for Top Search Engine Rankings

Major search engines have the same goal: to provide their users with the most relevant results. With research suggesting that 20 - 70% of online sales originate with a search—and search engine users rarely browsing beyond the first thirty results—web site owners are realizing the importance of being relevant. How can you improve your site's ranking for your keywords to get those coveted positions—and the potential increase in traffic and sales those rankings may bring? Here are Ten Dos to improve your chances:

1. Do choose keywords and keyword phrases that are relevant to your business and that people are actually looking for.

2. Do put those keywords in your page titles, metatags, headers, links and body text.

3. Do remember that Content is King: include substantial content at your site.

4. Do try to keep your content "fresh."

5. Do include a <noframes> tag if your site uses frames.

6. Do include links to your pages from your other pages.

7. Do build links to your site to increase your site's "popularity."

8. Do submit your site to directories like Yahoo and Open Directory as well as search engines.

9. Do make sure your web site hosting is reliable.

10. Do consider registering a domain name that includes your keywords.
